black and grey keg connectors

I'm having a tough time getting started kegging. My NEIPA seems to have clogged pick up tubes in two kegs :). But my real question is are the two connectors the same size? I'm having a real hard time getting the connector on the beer post.
 
They are not interchangeable. The gray one is a gas post, and goes on the IN post. The black is a liquid post, and goes on the OUT post.

There usually is a label by the post, either printed on or perhaps molded into the plastic. IN and OUT.

You can't, in other words, get a round peg to fit in a square hole. So to speak. :)

Thanks for that. So, a follow on. Which post is hex (for tightening) and which is the star fitting?

Not 100 percent sure what you mean, but I'll take a stab at it. The post that is used for gas has notches or something similar on it; the liquid post does not. Sort of like you see here for the gas post:

On this page, click the middle pic below the main one, and you'll see the difference; the gas post has notches on the hex part; the liquid post does not.
