Beer starter with Apple juice

Recently had a conversation with someone that seemed knowledgeable about the inner workings at lagunitus brewing. He said that they used apple juice to build all of their yeast starters.

Doesn't seek like the sugars would be comparable and therefore wouldn't be preparing the yeast that well for the eventual fermentation demands.
 
From what I know of Lagunitas, they are very cavalier about getting complete fermentations. So it wouldn't really surprise me.

I.e. they mash at crazy temps like 160. They get crazy high FGs and manage to balance it with hops and black magic.

These could just be rumors designed to make us think that Lagunitas are actually immortal beer druids in the service of Dionysus. I can't say.
