Made my first Barleywine back in January. Have been trying it from time to time to see if flavors develop or change to my liking. Very, very boozy. About 3 months ago, I added some French oak chips. I tried it this morning and you can definitely taste the subtle flavor of french oak. However, the boozy flavor still exists. Any advice on what to do to mellow it out? Cherries?

It probably just needs time. What is the ABV? Also could be fusel alcohols which don't really age out, or take a very long time.

13.5%abv.

I would personally just let it age. I don't drink my barley wines for at least a year. You may want to look into oaking it but it doesn't make it less "hot" it just enhances the flavor.

Thanks for the advice.

I tasted a barleywine I made in Dec. 2010 this past weekend. I hopped it very strongly so the hop flavor would hold on for a couple years. The first two years it was good, but tasted like an IPA. When we tried it Saturday, it was out of this world good! Only problem is knowing if it is in it's prime now, or if another year will make it better..
