So I managed to bust my ebay special refractometer and feel lost without it.

Even though there are a million vendors hawking refractometers, they all seem to come from the same manufacturers. They seem to fall into a couple of general buckets;

* cheap/fleabay handheld in soft case
* Brewfactometer/heftier handheld in a hard case
* Prosumer Digital

As a confessed gear nut that sometimes has more money than brains, I'm looking at the HI 96811 digital refractometer.

Has anyone tried this out, or another similar unit? For those that have stepped up from cheapo models - do you feel it was worth it?

Thanks.

I've been using one for a couple years now. I've compared it against a hydrometer a few times, and it was reasonably close (no telling whether the hydrometer or refractometer was off). You can consider this a thumbs-up for it.

Also, FWIW, I've seen a couple of these at breweries that I've visited.
