I have a couple of fast growing cataracts from taking steroids for another health issue I have. I have been going slowly blind for the last 6 or 7 months and was reduced to living in the gray stained glass chapel. I had completely lost color, depth and distance vision and the entire world was constantly like I dull grey overcast morning. I had my right eye done Monday morning and the results are nothing short of breath taking. In a 15 minute procedure that was completely painless I have 1/2 of my teen age vision already retored. You owe it to your self to see your eye Dr and discuss whether surgery, or Lasik or any other procedures may be right for you. Regaining my eye sight is just short of a miracle and the results have humbled me completely. If yyou have issues seeing well, take the time to see a real eye specialist and follow his recomendations. The surgery is quick, painless and you can see the results immediately. There is no waiting to see if it was a success or not. 98% of the people who have a procedure like this done have similar results. The 2% that do have complications have a better than even chance of the issue being minor and easilly addresssed in an office setting rather than going back to surgery again. I'm sold, if anybody needs more info on the procedure PM me and I will be glad to fill in all the blanks that I can to help you decide.

I was just diagnosed about a year ago with cataracts. It really shook me up at the time because I was told I'd have to wait until I was almost blind before I could get the surgery and I have to do a great deal of reading and studying with my job, so I imagined it as a catastrophe. I spoke to the specialist and he assured me I was misinformed. Thanks for the information because I was wondering just how effective it was.

I had corrective Lasik surgery last May, while my eyes were healthy (no cataracts for me!) I was very near-sighted, and had been since the 5th grade. I had long been used to wearing glasses and dealing with contacts. My fiance, now wife, urged me to consider Lasik partly because she wanted me to look good in our wedding photos. I had been hesitant but found the cost was not prohibitive and that my insurance even covered a small portion. It has been a great experience. I'll never forget being able to go in the ocean and see everything, play golf and see where the ball went, even things like going for a run and being comfortable. The only draw back has been a bit of night blindness but I recommend it to everyone. Just a great experience.

Scary as hell though! I did not sleep the night before.

My grandma had cataract surgery a few years back. She is 89 now and doesn't wear glasses. When she had it done I had assumed it was relatively major eye operation, but before I knew it she was up and about as if nothing happened.

I am worried about my dog. He has Canine Pannus and we have to give him steroid drops constantly to keep it at bay, but I'm reading about how steroids can cause cataracts. At this point the Pannus is enough to keep us busy. I have a feeling he will be blind in at least one eye eventually. On the bright side, it will be hard for him to run out of the yard if he's blind...

Homer,
You will be amazed what a blind dog can do. My 14 Year Old Golden is getting pretty bad cataracts and she only bumps stuff occasionally at best. When we move the furniture around it takes her about a day to adapt and then she is back to normal again. The aquirrels have a running chance to fet away from her now. When she was younger they didn't stand a chance. She would wait till they were in the middle of no mans land and out run them to the only tree in the middle of the yard.

Quick follow up on the cataract surgeries. Have had both eyes done already and into week 3 of the healing process already. The healing process on the second eye is a bit slower due to the fact that in addition to the cut he had to make to get to the lens he also had to make an additional relaxing cut to help pull the eye back into perfect alignment. At the one week follow up for the first (right) eye it had attained 20/20 vision already, when I returned for the one weekk follow up for the left eye it too had attained 20/20 also. His overall goal is to restore my vision to pre-cataract or better. I have 20/20 in both eyes again and he hopes to not even need to have any kind of readers or prescription lenses required. If you are contemplating having your eyes corrected with cataract removal surgery the results are both dramatic and amazing. When I came home from the first surgery I spent the rest of the day dozing on the couch and when I got up to eat I could see stuff I had been missing for a long time. When the second eye cleared up after a couple of days it too brought back sights I had been missing again for many years too. So if you have been advised to get cataract surgery do not hesitate to get it done as soon as possible. More than 98% of the patients report similar amazing results and the few who do have complications have those issues resolved in an office setting and go on to have very good outcomes too. The only negative outcome I could track down was from an individual who chronically rubbed his eyes and caused the incisions to re-open and take an excessive amount of time to heal. Be prepared for about 100 bucks worth of eye drops, but the one prescription fill was enough to treat both eyes according to the dosing schedule that they provided in my discharge paperwork, so about 50 bucks an eye and what ever your deductable or co-pay may be. Medicare will cover 80% of this cost up front and if you have Part D insurance you can get away pretty darn cheap all told. Definately a worthwhile experience with a very positive outcome for me and my family so far.
