I have a 2nd year centennial. The first shoot was a big, thick bastard grew very fast. I cut it back because I read this was common practice. About 2 weeks later I got two more fairly good size shoots that also went up like gang busters. They are 4 feet tall and are producing lateral arms already. I am assuming I should also cut these bad boys to the ground, because it is only May here in MI. I am thinking it is the crazy weather.

I just walked out to see the plant before shooting this message out to the internets and found 3 more healthy shoots about one foot tall 18 inches from the rest of the growth.

Suggestions?

How many shoots do you plan on keeping total? I have two 2nd year Newports that did very well last year; for one plant I am keeping 5 bines, for the other, 8.
