My mom is paranoid about sassafras and refuses to let me use it in root beer. I don't want explanations about how sassafras is safe i just want substitutes that aren't extracts.

Acacia or licorice will get you close. Nothing really replaces it though.

Pappy's sassafras tea concentrate is supposed to be safrole free.

Available direct or from Amazon. Some grocery stores near me carry it, but when I lived out west, I had never seen it before.
