So I have a porter down that I want to add vanilla beans to. I realize it is my choice if I secondary, but do I have to when I add the beans or will it be ok in the primary for a week to ten days on the beans?

I don't see any harm just dropping the beans into the primary. You will be fine leaving the beans in for 7-10 days. Sounds tasty!

Soak the beans in vodka overnight and then add the beans and the vodka to the beer. A secondary isn't necessary but if you decide to use it it will act as a bright tank making it easier to avoid sucking up trub when you bottle. However it does also increase the risk of oxidation and infection.
