I know i have read in various threads here about how to set up a proper taste test.

Is this right?

Goal: To determine whether there is a difference between beer X and beer Y and, if there is, to determine which beer the taster prefers.

Method:
1. Pour three beers, two of beer X and one of beer Y. Ask the taster if s/he can pick out the beer that is different.
2. If the taster can pick out Beer Y as being different, ask the taster how it is different and if he prefers it to beer X.

Is that it?
 
That's called a triangle test, and it's a good way to judge beers, but the difference between the beers should be small. This is for picking up subtle changes in recipe or process. For example, this would be a good way to see if you can tell the difference between two beers, one of which has been decocted and the other which was made with a simple infusion mash, or say, one pale ale with 5% honey malt and one with 8% honey malt.
 
Awesome, thank you for the reply! In this this case, we are tasting two beers, same recipe, but splits yeasts and handling. Beer X is an ale fermented at 57, bottle conditioned for 3 weeks and then stored cold for 2 weeks. Beer Y is the same beer but fermented with a lager yeast at 52, lagered for two weeks and bottle conditioned for three weeks.
