Yeast use O2 when they reproduce. A starter's only purpose is to make more yeast.

like ChshreCat said you want you starter to get as much O2 as possible to make the yeast reproduction as easy as possible for them. this will oxidize your starter but really you weren't going to drink it or pour the liquid into your wort anyway right?

Yeah don't use airlocks on starters. Like you guessed, it's for the oxygen.

I got one of those foam stoppers from Williams. Works great - allows oxygen in, but not the beasties.
