Hey all,

So I have a recipe I would like to brew up. It calls for:

1# Crystal 10L
1# Crystal 20L
.5# Carapils

Would Crystal 15L and/or CaraRed (15-19L) be a decent substitute for the Crystal? Should the amount stay the same?

Also, what would be a suitable sub for Carapils if I am unable to get it?

Yes you could use 2# of Crystal 15 instead, it'll get you in the ballpark. You can use 2# of CaraRed but your color will be slightly darker. You could even go 1.5# Crystal 10 and .5# Crystal 40. Just keep in mind variations to the original recipe will yield slight differences.

There's really no substitute for CaraPils other than another dextrine malt.

Thanks Ray,

MoreBeer says they switched to Crystal 15 because of the huge variations they were getting between some batches of Crystal 10 and 20. I might be able to get it all from another local HBS and stick to the original recipe.

Thanks for you help
