Did up an ESB today (recipe is in the DB on this site). Fly sparged for the first time and was surprised how much it increased my efficiency. Here's some brew porn detailing the day's proceedings and my most modest setup.

Made my starter yesterday with the Wyeast smack pack. It was given about 24 hours to do its thing before I pitched it.

Heated the strike water in my smaller kettle. I was looking for a taget temp of 152 F and at first buggered up my volume calcs...

.... once I realized my mistake I hit the temp rather quickly.

Mashed that dirty dog for a little over an hour and then went ahead with the Vorlauf till she cleared up.

Fly sparged keeping the level a couple of inches above the grain bed.

I collected 6.5 gallons in my main kettle at 1.048

I then kept the sparge partying going by starting the main kettle boil and letting the rest of the wort lauter into my small kettle.

I collected another 1.6 gallons at 1.014 which I set to boil and hit the hot break on my kitchen stove while the main kettle did the same over the propane.

Hit the hot break and kept on boiling for a good 15 minutes before adding any hops.

Once the hops were all in, the additional wort was added and the boil was complete I cooled it all down to room temp in under 15 minutes with my immersion chiller.

... and I'm now happy to say that it's sitting on my brew shelf turning into something tasty.

Man, I've got to get a premium account.

All the threads look good, and it sounds (and looks) tasteful, but y'know you could have replied to your first thread and posted the other two threads as replies...

Any who, looks great...

Yeah, I just realized that when I was sitting down at my computer....

DOH!!!

EdWort with the keen eye!

The funny thing is, that half of my temps are in Celcius and half are in Fahrenheit. I am truly a product of the Canadian seventies. I dough-in in Celcius, mash in either, sparge with Fahrenheit and chill in Celcius. I think of speed in metric unless it's when I'm airborne, height in inches and feet but distance in both till about 25 feet and then I think in meters and kilometers and weight is in pounds unless it's a tonne which I then think in metric. Liquid is metric with the exception of the "pint".

It's amazing that I get anything right... ever!!!!

Hop seeds. Crazy huh?

Some of the whole hops from my LHBS come with considerabley more seeds in them then others. I used Fuggles and Goldings and was amazed at the amount of seeds in them as I haven't used either for quite some time. Possibly it is the time of year/harvest, possibly it's the the strain of hop. In any case, it all gets filtered out before I pitch. I put everything back through my MLT and then drain that through a super fine screen and funnel and then into my primary. By the time it is pitched there's nothing in there except the smallest grain dust and pure sugary wort.

yes...."hop" seeds. I think someone hass been reading the "Bud-Beer" threads.....
:p

Hah! Considering I come from the heartland of BC Hydroponic Bud you'd think they might be an "adjunct" but alas, my poison is only that which can be quaffed.

Nothing wrong with BC bud. lol

I, like you, have trouble with our system, having grown up
using the standard system. When brewing, all of my weights
and measures are done standard.

I have fuggles that have those seeds also.

I have that same turkey fryer! Glad to see it can hold that much. If your interested, a standard beer keg fits on it just fine. I am getting ready to mod mine as a keggle.
