Mash-in water volume question?

Hello
If you are using a mash-tun with a false bottom how do you consider the water below the false bottom when computing you mash water volume? It seem like this volume would not form part of the original mash-in volume. You would have a thicker mash correct?

That is called deadspace, you should consider it when you're mashing. Use the Volume formula of a cylinder to figure out the volume of your deadspace, provided that your kettle is a cylinder. Programs such as BeerSmith have tools for calculating mash volume, there are other free versions of similar software, do some googling. Best of luck.
