I have a vial in the fridge with a best by date of 8/10. I'm going to use it in a 2 gallon test batch and was just going to pitch the vial. Given the date and the batch size is this appropriate?
 
If I were you, I'd make a small starter to see if the yeast is still viable. It will probably be mostly viable and work well for you, but I'd rather err on the side of caution.
