Sandhills Farm to Table is proud to announce the first annual Crops & Hops Beer Competition.

The rules are basic – brewers must create a beer featuring local ingredients. Sandhills Farm to Table defines “local” as being within 80 miles of the Sandhills. Home grown produce and herbs, even those not native to the Sandhills, are acceptable. Locally produced grains and hops, such as those offered by Farm Boy in Pittsboro, are strongly encouraged.

Atlantic Brew Supply is helping brewers create the most “local” beer possible by offering a 30% discount on locally sourced grains. Brewers must provide a completed registration form to Atlantic Brew Supply to receive the discount.

All beer submissions will be judged twice. A panel of professional brewers, including those from Aviator, Southern Pines Brewing Company, Four Saints and Railhouse, will use BJCP-style guidelines to judge the beer, provide feedback and award prizes. A second panel of judges, comprised of Sandhills Farm to Table members, will award prizes based on the “localness” of the beer and ability of the brewer to incorporate and highlight local ingredients.

Judging will be held and prizes awarded at the annual end-of-the-year Sandhills Farm to Table hoe-down on November 1st. Full details, including time & location of the farm where the event will take place, will be provided to brewers when they submit their registration forms.

Registration forms are available on the Facebook page for the event or by direct download. There is no application fee. Inquire about special discounts for brewers of gluten free beer. All submissions are required to submit a six pack of unmarked bottles of beer for judging. All submissions must be received by end of day on Monday, October 27th to be considered for judging on November 1st.

Good luck!
