So my idea was to brew these beers for my old man (who's a hophead in the worst way) and give them to him as a gift. I've brewed the daydream IPA before and I love it, so I wanted to make a black imperial version of it for contrast.

So I took this recipe:

Recipe: Daydream IPA
Brewer:
Asst Brewer:
Style: American IPA
TYPE: All Grain
Taste: (30.0)

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Boil Size: 6.70 gal
Post Boil Volume: 5.20 gal
Batch Size (fermenter): 5.00 gal
Bottling Volume: 5.00 gal
Estimated OG: 1.067 SG
Estimated Color: 5.4 SRM
Estimated IBU: 64.4 IBUs
Brewhouse Efficiency: 65.00 %
Est Mash Efficiency: 74.8 %
Boil Time: 60 Minutes
Bitterness Ratio: .964 IBU/SG

Hops are added continuously a la DogfishHead 60 minute IPA

Ingredients:
------------
Amt Name %/IBU
13 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) 92.0 %
8.0 oz Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) 3.5 %
4.0 oz Biscuit Malt (23.0 SRM) 1.8 %
4.0 oz Wheat, Flaked (1.6 SRM) 1.8 %
2.1 oz Aromatic Malt (26.0 SRM) 0.9 %
0.75 oz Warrior [16.70 %] - Boil 60.0 min 38.6 IBUs
0.50 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] - Boil 35.0 min 9.6 IBUs
0.50 oz Simcoe [12.70 %] - Boil 35.0 min 16.2 IBUs
0.50 oz Simcoe [12.70 %] - Dry Hop 12.0 Days 0.0 IBUs
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [10.30 %] - Dry Hop 12.0 Days 0.0 IBUs
1.0 pkg Nottingham (Danstar #-) [23.66 ml] -
0.50 oz Simcoe [13.00 %] - Dry Hop 3.0 Days 0.0 IBUs

And I'm going to brew this as the Imperial Black IPA:

Recipe: Nightmare Imperial IPA
Brewer:
Asst Brewer:
Style: Imperial IPA
TYPE: All Grain
Taste: (30.0)

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Boil Size: 6.70 gal
Post Boil Volume: 5.20 gal
Batch Size (fermenter): 5.00 gal
Bottling Volume: 5.00 gal
Estimated OG: 1.084 SG
Estimated Color: 29.1 SRM
Estimated IBU: 78.8 IBUs
Brewhouse Efficiency: 72.00 %
Est Mash Efficiency: 82.8 %
Boil Time: 60 Minutes
Bitterness Ratio: .934 IBU/SG

Ingredients:
------------
Amt Name %/IBU
14 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) 86.5 %
12.0 oz Carafa III (525.0 SRM) 4.6 %
9.6 oz Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) 3.7 %
5.3 oz Biscuit Malt (23.0 SRM) 2.0 %
5.3 oz Wheat, Flaked (1.6 SRM) 2.0 %
2.9 oz Aromatic Malt (26.0 SRM) 1.1 %
1.00 oz Warrior [16.70 %] - Boil 60.0 min 45.0 IBUs
0.75 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] - Boil 35.0 min 12.5 IBUs
0.75 oz Simcoe [12.70 %] - Boil 35.0 min 21.3 IBUs
0.50 oz Simcoe [12.70 %] - Dry Hop 12.0 Days 0.0 IBUs
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [10.30 %] - Dry Hop 12.0 D 0.0 IBUs
1.0 pkg Nottingham (Danstar #-) [23.66 ml] -
0.50 oz Simcoe [13.00 %] - Dry Hop 3.0 Days 0.0 IBUs

I've tried to keep the bitterness ratio similar, and the percentages of each grain similar. I've added the Carafa III (de husked) and replaced a percentage of the 2-row with it.

Any foreseeable problems with this recipe? Should I be adding extra dry hop to balance the malt or should I be increasing the bitterness ratio to compensate for the increased alcohol?

Thanks!

i'd say add a healthy dose at flame out or as you start chilling

Hop additions are going to be done as continuous additions just like DFH 60 Minute, so there will be additions every minute until flameout; I'm just not sure if I need to add more hops or if I'm ok keeping the bitterness ratio similar.

i understand that, but 1.5 oz spread over 35min seems light for an IIPA to me

i was suggesting doing that as planned then adding another dose at flameout

i think keeping the BU:GU ratio is a good idea

Ah, I see what you're saying.

In that case, I may drop the warrior back to .75 oz and then go heavy on the constant hopping.
