Saturday mornings, after bingeing on cartoons, Mom would kick us out of the house, "unless you're bleeding from an artery, I don't want to see you home until the street lights come on"

I thought it was so she could clean.

but the house was always a mess and the recycling was full of empty wine bottles

Last time I visited my folks in Colorado I ran into a swarm of these blowing across the highway. Probably not a good idea to run over them, but I was driving a rental, which I regarded as indestructible until proven otherwise.
