What kind of packet? Dry or liquid?

How high is your starting gravity?
 
Liquid, dont know gravity have not brewed yet, new recipe from scratch, its a california ale yeast too btw for a citrus IPA
 
Yeah, I would use the whole vial or packet. I brew 2.5 gal brews all the time and pitch the entire vial. If you believe in Mr. Malty, he usually suggests more than 1 vial/packet per 5 gal anyway.
 
The important thing is that you have enough healthy yeast cells to ferment. At this level too much isn't an issue.
