I think you'll find that nowadays you can make a mighty tasty beverage, and have a lot of fun doing it. You found the right place to get you going again.

You'll find that the yeast is better, there are more varieties, and it's healthier then you've probably used. You'll find that the idea of rushing the beer off the yeastcake after a few days and into a secondary has fallen by the wayside, in fact many of us leave our beer in primary for a month and THAT alone goes a long way to improving the beer.

You'll find that all-grain brewing is pretty easy and a turkey fryer w/kettle and a modified 5 or 10 gallon cooler turned into a mashtun are a long way from what folks did back then.

You'll find that extracts are fresher these days and there are more varieties to choose from, both liquid and dry. And they don't tend to sit on shelves for a lonig time.

There's a lot of great tricks like late extract addition and full volume boils, that can even make the cheepest extract canned kit can be made to win medals.

And like others have said, podcasts and forums like this have a lot of state of the art info and tips to make great tasting beer.

With the quality and variety of malts, extracts and yeasts today, it is difficult to make bad beer now. A little attention to cleaning and sanitation and you'll be fine.
 
David mentioned another good point, even sanitization has probably come along way since you brewed. You probably did bleach water? Now we have great no-rinse wet contact sanitizers such as iodophor and starsan. Makes sanitization a no brainer.
