I just made my first starter with instructions from MoreBeer.com, they suggest stirring the starter as often as possible... Howtobrew.com does not mention anything about stirring the starter... So I was hoping to hear what everyone else does. Thanks in advance!

Yes give it a good stir every so often to help oxygenate it. Best option is to get a stir plate but that costs money ;)

Just to clarify, dont stick anything into ur starter to stir it, just swirl it around every so often.

Stirring is good (by swirlling), but a stir plate is better. Derrin's brewing hardware stocks kits and ready made stirplates for a lot less than elsewhere.

I can't find the reference now, but there was a reputable-looking study showing swirling regularly (every hour) gave 4x more yeast, while a stirplate gave 15x.
