what is a good higher abv beer for a beginner to try to brew? i have brewed three beers to this point, a cream ale, cream stout and ipa. all extract. i would like to try a "big beer". thanks in advance for any input.

It depends what you want from it. The simplest and worst way is to load it with sugar. Next is to load it with DME.
A good balanced recipe is brewed to style and the ABV matches the flavour profile.
There's loads of recipe resources that you can search for a recommended brew.

Download Beer Smith it comes with recipes and you can play with them.

I might be wrong but anything with a SG above 1.070 begins to get into the big beer range. There are many styles of beer that you can make but my favorite are hoppy IPAs.
