Do slants only last 3 months?

Thats pretty much it, read a great tutorial on making yeast slants, but the author stated that a fresh slant should stay viable for about 3 months. Thats really not that long if your trying to to have a stockpile of all types of yeast. If you need to build a starter and reslant every three months, it would probably be worth the investment to just start a frozen yeast bank.
 
I have read generally that slants last up to a year or more. They can also be re-grown from one slant to the next without need for a starter. Can you provide a link to your source?
 
I've recultured from slants that were over a year old. Start small and step up several times to get to your pitching volume.
