If you're talking about a half barrel and by "opening" you mean tapping it with a pump style dispensing system, you have about 8 hours before the beer oxidizes.

If you mean tapping any keg, sanke or corny, with a CO2 based dispensing system, it will last for at least a year.
 
yup. the kegs you have to pump by hand, that pump puts air into the beer, causing oxidation.

as long as you use CO2 to pressurize the keg, it doesn't oxidize and remains sanitary inside.
the keg can even be warmed to room temp and chilled several times without adverse effects.
