When transfering a lager from the primary fermentation bucket to the seconardy carboy. Are you suppose to avoid adding the yeast and sludge on the bottom of the primary into the secondary?

As far as I know...YES. From what I have gathered...the secondary isn't really "fermenting" its more for clarifying and allowing the flavors to come together.

It's best to get 5-1/2 gallons or so into the primary so that when you transfer to a 5 gallon carboy you can top it off and avoid oxidation from excess head space in the secondary vessel. You need enough to do this and still leave the trub behind.
