Is the iodine found at a local drug store usable for brewing applications?

Yup...that's where I got mine. It's a small vial with a dropper.

I assume you're talking about using it for a starch conversion test.
 
you can, but you have to do the math based on the strength of the solution to figure out how much to dillute it to to get to the 12.5ppm that renders it a no-rinse/wet contact santizer.

It's much cheaper to go to a farm/feed store like Tractor Supply Company and get teet/dairy iodine sanitzer. You can get a gallon of it for about the same price as a small bottle of iodophor from your homebrewshop.
 
Called the local feed store. When asked about iodine, I didn't know what to say, so I told them it was for dairy, milking... I think I said teet too... learned that bleach is a great product on teets... So embarrassed...
