Definition of vorlauf?

Vorlauf is derived from the German verb vorlaufen which means to "run ahead". In brewing this is when you initially run off wort from your lauter tun into a vessel called a grant. You then keep recirculating the runnings from the grant back on top of the grain bed until the wort begins to run clear. You can now proceed with a normal sparge.

I think another meaning for this word is-OOPS!!!I killed another hooker.(derived from the eastern part of Germany in the late 1950's)

Vorlauf simply uses the grain bed to clear the mash runnings prior to lautering to reduce grain fragments ending up in the boil kettle.
Not everyone runs a recirculating mash rig...

When I was living in German in the 70s I ordered a steak and it came out bloody (I don't like blood). So I told the waiter "Ich bin kein Blutsauger" (I'm not a blood sucker (vampire).
 
The old SOB in me rears its ugly head as I think to myself, "if someone asks this question, it is apparent that they do not own, or have not read, a basic book on brewing which would have the meaning of that word and, therefore, the answer to the question within its covers". The internet is a wonderful thing, but it seems in too many instances to have replaced having at least rudimentary knowledge of whatever topic the user is has decided to enter.
