I've been fascinated about the thought of fermenting a beverage from honey, but before I embark on a journey that may take a year or more, I’d like to try a commercial mead that would fit into the typical mead category.

Any suggestions on a brand that would fall into a traditional mead style?

I was told by someone who makes mead that Redstone was a pretty decent mead. I had the Black Raspberry and enjoyed it. It was a bit sweet, but still good.

The best one I've been able to find locally (Ann Arbor, Michigan) is Oliver Camelot Mead.

Also, if you want to do a quick mead so you'll have less time invested, you could do worse than Joe's Ancient Orange http://www.gotmead.com/index.php?option=com_rapidrecipe&page=viewrecipe&recipe_id=118&Itemid=6 . It's fairly foolproof, even if some of the methods are less than orthodox.

I have heard nothing but good thing about redstone meadery.
I just ordered a bottle to see if I like it before I make some.
They have some pricey reserve stuff that is supposed to be really good, but kind of pricey

thanks all, i ended up getting some local stuff, i'll have to try some of your suggestions
