Dead yeast?

So, I wanted to clean out some of my extract kits (got 2 kit of the month kit subscriptions for Christmas last year) and I opened two that had wyeast smack packs, both american ale and both had ballooned to full size... So, I made a starter (100 g DME and to 1000ml water) added both yeast cultures and their nutrient packs. Of course I boiled the water and DME, just saying. Been about 30 hours and no activity. Might notice a slight amount of increased sediment. Should I assume the cultures are toast, or might they pick up after a day or two? SG was 8 brix (1.032)
 
I'd give them another day or two before I wrote them off as toast. Yeasties are hearty little critters. There might be some squirmin' in there somewhere...
