the carboy is at my buddies house, so I am describing this second hand. The airlock is bubbling about every 3-4 seconds. Begin fermenting 24-48 hours ago. The kraussen, according to my buddy, has a brown "slick" on only 1/4 of it. (Nut Brown Ale). Not to worry, right?

Some yeast make a really nasty looking krausen, some look all nice and fluffy. Don't worry about it. Give it 7-10 days in primary and then take your reading and taste the sample, I bet it's fine. :mug:

hop oils and resins also collect atop the krausen, and supposedly the beer is improved if these are blown out of the finished product. If lots of hops get into the fermenter, this brown slick can be quite excessive, but really no big deal.
