Hi All,
I am going to make a paddle for stirring in the grains into my 10 gallon mash tun. If I make it out of oak do you think the oak will impart any weird flavors into the mash.
Has anyone else made one and if so what type of wood did they use ?

While they say a tight grained wood like maple is best, I made one out of red oak and it seems to work fine.

Maybe my palate is not that refined, but I find it hard to believe that stirring a mash for a few minutes with oak would impart noticeable flavor?

I made mine out of hickory. My hand drill was smoking using forstner bit on this very hard wood, but it looks and works great. Have noticed no off flavors.
