I was gonna do a 2.5 gallon recipe by cutting down a recipe by half. But I only have two 2 gallon buckets, is it wise to go half and half? Also do I use have of the yeast packet?

i would make a starter with the yeast packet and then split the starter. should work by splitting it but be sure to leave some head space and use a blowoff tube

Split everything in half EXCEPT the yeast. Yeast is good for 1 to 5 gallons and is pretty much worthless after it's been opened. Do not make a starter with dry yeast, just hydrate as usual.

Okay, reread your post and think you are asking about splitting the yeast between two buckets.

If that is the case, hydrate the yeast in a cup of water, then pour half in one bucket and half in the other bucket.
