So, I'm fairly new to home brewing. I am going for a cream stout with vanilla in it. Say I wanted to use vanilla extract: when would be the best time to add the extract? Should I add in during or right after the boil? before the whole thing? After or during fermentation? Or is it just a much better idea to use the vanilla beans?

I've used vanilla in an oatmeal stout a few times. I prefer to soak whole vanilla beans in scotch for a few days and the add the scotch and beans to a secondary and rack the beer over the mixture. After about 3 weeks its a great oaky vanilla flavor.
