i've noticed on pictures of peoples carboys the cap they have on top is red and has a hose coming from it. My question is: if i'm using the carboy as a secondary fermenter would i use this red cap with the hose or a rubber plug cap and what would the difference be.

thanks for your help

No. That hose is a blow-off tube. You would only use it during primary fermentation. Search the forum for "Blow off tube" for more info. It's much simpler to just use an airlock for secondary.

thank you for the info

doing my first batch ever tomorrow and trying to get more info on the ins and outs

jereme - Unless you can baby sit your primary fermentation, you want a blow off tube. Really, you don't want to clean up the mess from the ceiling, everything around it, etc.
