I am starting all grain soon and am putting together a few things on a budget.I found a cooler in my basement with a leaky spigot, i was thinking of converting it into a mash/lauter tun with a copper pipe manifold,my concern however is that it may be too small.

what's the smallest cooler you guys would use for a 5 gallon batch of all grain?
 
5 if you brew below gravities 1.055 or so.

I had a hard time fitting all the grain I needed into a 5 gallon cooler for 5 gallon batches (because I would usually design for 5.5-6 gallon batches to get 5 into the bottles). Plus factor in mashing out and what-not and you won't have any room.

I eventually got a 12 gallon cooler and if I had to do it all again, I would have gotten the 12 from the get-go.
