An acquaintence from a local brewery is going to give me a fresh batch of ale yeast the day before my next brew. My first thought is (after being in the fridge overnight) to let it warm up to room temp for a few hours and then pitch straight into the wort. Q: Do I need to do any special prep work for fresh yeast, anything beyond what you would normally do when pitching yeast?

Unless your friend is doing a cell count for you, check http://www.mrmalty.com to see how much slurry to pitch. You don't need to worry about warming the yeast up either. It's perfectly fine - and maybe even preferable - to pitch cold yeast into warm wort, just not the other way around.
