My red ale has been in the primary for 13 days and I am going to move it to secondary this weekend (need the primary for my cherry wheat).

Should I purge the better bottle with CO2 before racking from the pail?

Since I am a few weeks from kegging, I have not filled my CO2 bottle. However, the paint ball place that fills them is 5 minutes away, so that is not an issue.

nah. The beer still has some co2 in it. once you rack it over, it will produce a nice protective layer over the beer.

I have noticed this also, when you move the beer from the primary to secondary a lot of CO2 comes out of solution. If you are close to filling the secondary up, the "air" space will easily be filled with C02 pretty quickly.
