I had surgery on my nose on Friday (Deviated Septum) and I have not had a beer since. I still have 5 days left on my antibiotics. 10 days without a beer. I'm 35 and I cannot remember a time since I was a teen that I haven't had a beer. What's weird is I've been on antibiotics before and I don't remember not drinking. This time I decided to look up (Keflex) online and see what the side effects were with beer and I'm getting everything from "nothing" to "coma". I really hate the Internet sometimes.:(

Ok there are many on this site whe have rn status, however my bf is a nurse. He said 90% of antibiotics only have a decrased effect if you drink alot. 1-2 per night should not make a difference on most antibiotics u can take. IT IS GETTING DRUNK while on them that matters the most.

How bad is that surgery? I think I might need it myself..

Surgery wasn't bad, I was knocked out for the whole thing. I went in at 10am and was out by 1pm. I do however have two splints (hard tubes) up my nose and a stitch going between my nostrils. It kinda hurts but nothing major. Thankfully they come out tomorrow morning. The last 5 days have sucked, truthfully. It's been very hard to sleep because the moment I fall asleep I start to snore and wake up. I found that if I shoved gauze up my nose and taped it all shut I could fall asleep if I was partially sitting up. Luckily that has worked and I'm not going insane. I'll let you know tomorrow how I feel after I can finally breath through my nose. I'm really exited, from what I hear I'll have more energy from simply being able to breath through my nose properly. Bad sinuses and allergies are something I was born with so I really have nothing to compare it too yet.

Yow!! and I noted that you're in Arizona, where you don't have as many fornicating plants and the dreaded mold spores. I have the immune system of my Polish "work til you die" ancestors, and since cutting WAY back on dairy foods I don't have nearly as many sinus problems as I used to, but I've got the deviated septum as well. If the "good side" gets inflamed then I becoome very unpleasant to be around. Still not nearly as bad as The Boyfriend, who avoids doctors and instead just makes that horrible throat clearing sound all the time, and when the sinuses get really bad, he throws up from the junk in his throat.

So many sympathetic nods from this corner of the world. I'm sure the hassle you're going through now will definitely pay off in the long run. Being able to breathe is um... important :)

I've had the splints out for 6 hours now and I feel like a new person. I have never breathed through my nose like this before. If anyone has trouble breathing through their nose I highly recommend getting an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat doctor and get it fixed. Assuming you have insurance or the ability to fork over 3K. I ended up paying $299 with a $35 copay and insurance covering 90%.

Also I GET TO DRINK BEER AGAIN!!!!:ban: Doctors orders. :) He said a couple of beers isn't going to hurt anything. What a great guy :mug:

That's what sucks about a lot of these drugs. "DO NOT TAKE WITH ALCOHOL"

Even Viagra says so. Well if I am not drinking I definitely don't need no stinking Pecker Picker Uppers.

glad you're feeling better. I had the surgery, along with a sinus roto rooter less then a month ago. You're right, as soon as the splints came out I felt so much better. Did you get a funky smell up there?

Some people are much more strict about the alcohol thing, with meds. I have never told patients to not drink alcohol with their meds, unless it was just downright contraindicated. I think it is overkill to ask someone not to drink while on Keflex. But, I suppose some physicians may have reasons that I am unaware of. So, my advice is to do what your doctor asks. But... I'd also ask them to give me the full explanation of why. :D

I hope you are healed up, and drinking beer, soon. Mike

I had the same surgery about 5 years ago and I remember being more miserable than i had ever been, but the benefits are definately worth it. Glad to hear you are feeling better!

I won't take antibiotics unless it were a life and death situation.
I believe you should let your body's immune system fight of infections.
People's immune systems never get any stronger taking antibiotics every time their doctor prescribes them, and not allowing their body to do what it's designed to do.

I have seen some pretty nasty infections from some people post-op who refused to take antibiotics. Take the risk if you want, but I will opt for the proactive approach.

Biggest thing with antibiotics is to take the full course...never stop the antibiotics early

You'd be taking antibiotics for surgery in your nose/sinus area. An infection there could spread to your brain very quickly and kill you.

I've got the same problem but have been putting the surgery off for years. I can't live without Afrin...to the like of 12 hour relief my a$$. More like 3.5 hour relief. ENT wont touch me as long as I'm on it. Apparanly makes the recovery more difficult. So, I opted to get neutered on opening day of March Maddeness this year instead. In at 8AM and hopefully home by noon or so to watch 4 straight days of college ball! I fully plan on replacing the frozen peas with a an ice cold craft brew at somepoint throughout the weeekend.

Back to the topic at hand...I use to and still do drink on antibiotics. A beer or two wont impact anything - just dont go getting blacked out.

What exactly is a deviated septum? My nose seems like its plugged half of the day and im always clearing my throat. I now have a habit of quickly pushing a small amount of air through my nose to loosen the **** up, pretty annoying. My dad and sister seem to have sinus problems as well.

I met with the ear nose and throat specialist on Monday and after a few meds that didn't work, they're recommending the 'septoplasty' and 'turbinate reduction'. The septum is the part of your nose that separates the two nostrails. If it's crooked, making one nostrail bigger than the other, they call it 'deviated' (ie: Not down the middle). My doctor said that most people actually have some degree of deviation, but the other factor for me is my swollen 'turbinates'. They come from the other side of your nostrail and grow towards the septum. In my case, they're enlarged and medicine doesn't help, so i think i'm going to have the surgery.

I think my insurance will cover it all except my $15 copay, they'll schedule the surgery for a friday morning, and remove those tubes on the following monday.

I was already planning on moving forward with this, but after hearing how much it helps, i'm definitely excited for it now!

Thanks for the info, my wife makes fun of me because I do not ask questions. "Just get it done doc" I say :)

Those two procedures were the same ones that I had. I remember reading them on the forms I signed right before surgery.

This morning is the first morning I woke up without having to "clear my head" in my whole life. I have all this energy that I've never had before and I haven't even had my coffee. Hell I might not even have coffee this morning. :D

I'm so considering doing this! I'm 34 and it's been years since my nose has really worked. Worst of all, I'm trying to go through BJCP certification and I realize how lousy I am at picking up aromas 90% of the time. (Oh yeah, plus I sleep poorly and can't breathe through my nose all winter)

My sense of smell is much better now. I noticed this morning how "different" the world smells. Kinda weird I know. I can't tell yet if my pallet has changed but I still don't like the taste of my first homebrew :(

ALL WINTER?!?!?! That's gotta be like 9 months where you're at :D jk. I have a feeling it's one of the better decisions I've made in life. Time will tell.
