Here is really nice article about a new hop farm in New Mexico and hopefully the start of a new hop growing industry in NM.
Valencia farmer sows seeds of success with hops
De Smet Farms is about 15 miles south of Albuquerque and right on the banks of the Rio Grande River at an elevation of 4800 feet above sea level. The Dukes of Ale Homebrew Club (www.dukesofale.com) just had a tasting of several brews all made exclusively with De Smet Cascade Hops. The general concenses is that these hops are great. I brewed an Irish Red Ale. It came out more "hoppy" than the style calls for but it was a very tasty brew anyway. We just need to figure out the right way to use them. The club's tasting gurus will be writing up a review soon with all the technical stuff and characteristics of these hops. Mike De Smet has started with only 5 acres but plans to plant 20-30 more acres soon.
Mike De Smet is a homebrewer himself and his email is [email protected] if you want to contact him with questions or to order hops.
