to make things simple (and cheap) can i bottle my finished cider in the 1 gallon containers the juice originally came in? (i don't plan on carbonating)
Fill then up near the top, squeeze the bottles slightly, crank the cap on, let go of the squeeze (creating a vacuum in the bottle) and store them on their side so the cap is completely covered with fluid. This should seal it up better than just closing the cap normally. Additionally, you can put a light smear of keg lube around the cap lid to help seal it up.
