I've only made 2 extract batches from kits (Belgian Ale and Honey Brown Ale), which both have turned out fine. For my 3rd I wanted to make an IPA and found the clone for partial mash 90 min Dog IPA.

I messed around with Beer Smith and just tried to get the OG, FG, and color to the partial mash using LME and DME and kept the hops the same.

Below is the recipe I came up with and my basic question is even if this doesn't turn out close the the 90 Min Dog IPA, does this look like a do able recipe. I'm still learning the ropes.

I will be doing a partial boil of about 3 - 3 1/2 gallons in a 5 gallon stock pot.

________

90 Min IPA
Brew Type: Extract Date: 2/28/2007
Style: Imperial IPA Brewer: Bill
Batch Size: 5.00 gal Assistant Brewer:
Boil Volume: 3.42 gal Boil Time: 90 min

Ingredients Amount Item Type % or IBU
7.00 lb Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Dry Extract 63.6 %
3.00 lb Amber Liquid Extract (12.5 SRM) Extract 27.3 %
1.00 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L (20.0 SRM) Grain 9.1 %

1.00 oz Warrior [15.00%] (90 min) Hops 26.9 IBU
0.75 oz Simcoe [12.00%] (90 min) Hops 16.2 IBU
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [8.50%] (90 min) Hops 15.3 IBU
- these will be combined and added in equal parts over the 90 mintues, I think it worked out to .2oz ever 7 1.2 minutes.

0.25 oz Simcoe [12.00%] (Dry Hop 14 days) Hops -
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [8.50%] (Dry Hop 14 days) Hops -
1 Pkgs California Ale (White Labs #WLP001) Yeast-Ale

Beer Profile Estimated Original Gravity: 1.084 SG (1.075-1.095 SG) Measured Original Gravity: 1.010 SG
Estimated Final Gravity: 1.018 SG (1.012-1.020 SG) Measured Final Gravity: 1.005 SG
Estimated Color: 12.7 SRM (8.0-15.0 SRM) Color [Color]
Bitterness: 62.4 IBU (60.0-110.0 IBU) Alpha Acid Units: 6.5 AAU
Estimated Alcohol by Volume: 8.5 % (7.5-10.0 %) Actual Alcohol by Volume: 0.6 %

_______

I believe the bitterness at 62.4 IBU is probably not what it will end up being since Beer Smith is figuring on a 90 min boil.

Just wanted some thoughts before I go out and spend 50 bucks on a recipe.

Why not boil the hops for the entire 90 minutes, hop schedule still shows 60? It would increase your bitterness alittle, if that's what you want.

Or maybe you are, you can change the boil time in beersmith for the individual ingredients. You could even add in every different timed addition for every .2 oz, but that would be tedious.

Also, with that much malt, you may consider doing a late addition with some (if not most) to avoid over carmelizing the brew.

Other than that, looks good. Don't forget to make a good starter for that yeast. Happy brewing.

doh, forgot to change the hops to the full 90 minutes. And yes, putting in each .2oz addition is going to be too tedious for me.

This is the 1st I've heard of doing a late addition of malt, I'll have to read into that and follow your recommendations.

Thanks for the info.
