I agree. Had this beer last season and thought it was great then too. Frankly I've never had a bad beer from Great Lakes. Even styles I don't particularly care for taste good coming from them.
I just had one tonight at dinner and I tasted a slightly earthy very slightly smokey/roasty flavor. I've had a similar character coming from Wy1968 on a Honkers Ale clone I made. The overall grain bill seems pretty simple - maybe pale malt and Crystal 60? I think most of the smoother character is based on the yeast/fermentation. It's got a nice malty, slightly sweet finish.
