I bought a 15 gal closed top plastic barrel from the LHBS to use as a fermenter.
It used to hold LME. Cleaned up great.

My only concern is how to transfer the beer out of the fermenter after its ready.

My auto siphon is not long enough, but I guess I could make a racking cane out of stainless tubing.

My other option is to put a ball valve near the bottom and drain the tank.
If I do put in a ball valve, I'm wondering how high to place it so that I don't drain trub?

Anyone out there done this before?
Any help would be appreciated.

How would you tighten the ball valve nut? If you went this way you would constantly be removing it for a good cleaning then re-install and risk leaking. Go with the home made racking cane.
