I've got some extra room in the garden and I'm looking to plant some raspberries there. Does anyone have any experience dealing with them? I know they like a lot of sun but do they eat up a lot of water, too? Also, what kind of differences in flavor/aroma do you find between purple and red raspberries? I'm looking at either a Heritage or a Brandywine plant. Thanks! :cross:

After they get established here in Oregon, you don't water them at all. We have them growing wild on the walking trails where I live. I actually prefer the Golden ones which were doing really well until I messed with them (green thumb - not). I planted three kinds a few years ago but ripped them out to grow hops, although I still have a few trying to poke through every year. If I really want some I can just go for a walk and grab them. Never had the purple variety so can't help with that.

For desserts & beer,I like the flavor of the red. But make sure you'll wanna keep them where you plant them. You so much as leave a tiny speck of hair root in the ground,& they come back! Same thing with wild roses, dang things. Couldn't even poison the lil pricks. I wish they were the wild red raspberries that grow in the ditch out back, but noooo. I get the worthless flowers that bloom once in the spring. Also, you may wanna get some netting to keep the birds off them.
