So for those of us who live in hot dry places here is some info on a possible substitue.

I have not located a source to purchase this plant yet, or possibly someone that has one I can harvest from but I am on the hunt now that I know it exists. It would make an inetersting experiment to see if or how the results compare to real hops.
 
Sounds interesting. Try Gardening in Texas

Texas isn't any hotter or drier than Yakima county in Washington, so hops are an option for the home grower at least. The tough part is getting them through the first year.
 
Yeah, I couldn't get my watering system working right and I ended up with 2 long waterings a day till I could get a new controller. Ended up with rot in 1/3 of the rhizomes.

Frequent SHORT watering with good drainage. You should be able to grow in Texas. As long as you don't strike oil with your auger. :D
