My hop rhizomes are in their third year and I have yet to prune the root balls. I have read that some people dig up the rhizomes to cut back the roots so they do not expand too vigorously. I was just hoping for some tips on pruning the roots. How long should I leave the roots?

Just cut it in a 1'x1' ball and you'll be set. Either sell or give away the other roots unless you plan on growing more.

Yup. I just measure off 1' from the center of the crown in a square and start slicing through the soil. Then pull up everything outside of said square.

After 3 years of growth, you are gonna have a LOT of material to deal with.
