I've got a couple of cans of Mr. Beer hopped malt extract but have since moved on to AHS 5 gallon kits. Can hopped malt extract be used for a starter? (I don't know beer chemistry enough to know if the hops mess a starter up)

Sure, I can see no reason you could not. A starter is really just a very small beer. I could not tell you how much to use, the fact it was a liquid turned me off from doing that with the can from the kit I bought for the fermentor and bottles. I made mine into a RIS that is fermenting, with the addition of a partial mash and a bunch of hops.
