So a buddy and I are going to spilt a batch, based on a beer we had at a local brew pub. We will brew this May and have it ready to drink for a cookout on 07.07.07.
It will have 7 different 'C' hops. I don't want to just jam a beer full of 7 different types of hops because I can, I want to make a damn good tasting beer. We are shooing for moderate-high bitterness and high hop flavor/high hop aroma. At the same time I want the malt to play some too. Here's the first crack at a recipe, this one was quite difficult to make up, because there's so many hops to put into it.
My biggest question is do you think this is over-hopped, as far as weight of hops....I don't want it to become a not so tasty beer just to say there are 7 C hops in it.
Style: India Pale Ale
Type: Partial mash (60min at 153F).
Size: 5.75 gallons (larger volume to attempt to account for losses due to hops)
Color: 21 HCU (~12 SRM)
Bitterness: 57 IBU
OG: 1.066
FG: 1.016
Alcohol: 6.5% v/v
Grain:
1 lb. Maris Otter
2 lb. American Vienna (4L)
2 lb. American Munich (8L)
1 lb. CaraMunich (55L)
Mash: 75% efficiency
Boil: 60 minutes

0.50 oz. Challenger (7.0% AA, 60 min.)
1.0 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 60 min.)
0.75 oz. Chinook (12% AA, 60 min.)
0.34 oz. Columbus (12.0% AA, 25 min.)
0.34 oz. Crystal (4.0% AA, 25 min.)
0.33 oz. Columbus (12.0% AA, 20 min.)
0.33 oz. Crystal (4.0% AA, 20 min.)

Total Hop Weight in Kettle: 4.25oz
Dry hop in secondary for 10 days with 1oz each of whole flower Centennial, Columbus, and Cluster.

Any hophead who's done something with a ton of hops have any comments? Anything I'm totally off the mark?
I think John Palmer said it best, "...just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be done." Hopefully I'm not in that ballpark.
