Acid Wash

I recently heard a professional brewer talk about doing an acid wash every x-brews to clean all the solid material off her equipment. Anyone do the same? Is it any differnent than using pbw? And where would I find the proper acid for that?

I've done it before when I first bought all my kegs. Five Star Chemical makes a product called Acid #5. That's what I used.

PBW is an alkaline cleaner. It is best at removing organic soil.

Inorganic material, like beer stone, needs an acid to remove it.

The brewing process creates both organic and inorganic soils. Both an alkaline cleaner and an acid cleaner should be used to totally remove all the soils.

ACID 5 from 5 Star is an Nitric/Phosphoric Acid blend. It is used by quite a few brewpubs and micros. Check with your LHBS to see if they can obtain this for you.

ACID #5 from Five Star Chemical is what I use after every PBW wash.
I buy all my supplies directly from Five Star Chemicals.
