What are they used for ?? Am I able to use them to aid in my cooler LT as a filter ??

Rice hulls are added to your grain bill, in the mash tun, to help avoid a stuck mash. I use them whenever I make a wheat beer, throw in a few handfuls. No impact on flavor or color.

Maize is different. You can use flaked corn and toss it directly into your mash (like oatmeal). Or you can use grits but precook them before adding to the mash.

Corn/maize will add fermentable sugars and flavor to your wort. It is often used in making cream ales or light American lagers. Rice (not rice hulls) can also be added to the mash for these styles.
