Flaked barley in a pale ale?

You can certainly use it but it will make your beer pretty hazy. 3% wheat malt works great for aiding heat retention without really changing the beer.
I've used it plenty of times in pale ales (up to about 5% of the grist). It works great for head retention, and I like the flavor. I've also never had a problem with haze, but I don't chill my beers below 55 F.
